慶應義塾大学で経済学とジャーナリズムを学び、1968年、ＮＨＫに放送記者として入局。国際部などを経て、1978年から2年間、ワシントン特派員、1989年から1年間、ニューヨーク駐在として、国 際政治・経済を幅広く取材した。また、1995年から3年間、ヨーロッパ総局長としてロンドンを拠点にヨーロッパ・中東・アフリカの取材の指揮を執った。この間、1986年から「ニュースワイド」、 1993年から「おはよう日本」のキャスターをそれぞれ2年間担当した。2000年から国際放送局長として、国際発信と各国の放送機関との関係強化を推進したあと、2003年から解説委員長を2年、解説主幹を3年間務めた。2008年1月から副会長。

Yoshinori Imai studied economics and journalism at Keio University in Tokyo. He started his career as a TV journalist for NHK, Japan’s sole public broadcaster in 1968. He was assigned to Washington as a correspondent between 1978 and 1981. He was also given foreign assignments in New York as business correspondent between 1989 and 1990, and then in London as bureau chief and head of news operation in Europe, Middle East and Africa between 1995 and 1998. Meanwhile, he worked as anchorperson of the nation-wide news program, from 1986 to 1988 for the first time, and from 1993 to 1995 for the second time. In 2000, Imai was appointed to be the Director-General of the International Planning and Broadcasting Department. The department is responsible for NHK’s television and radio broadcasting operations overseas as well as relations and cooperation with foreign broadcasters and organizations. In 2003, he became an executive commentator/ program-host at NHK. He has been Executive Vice President of NHK since January, 2008.

東京大学法学部卒業（法学士）、英国ケンブリッジ大学経済学部卒業（経済学士）。1962年外務省入省、文化交流部長、経済局長、外務審議官等を歴任。また駐ベトナム大使（1994-95）、駐韓国大使（1997-99）、駐フランス大使（1999-2002）。外務省を2002年11月に退官後、総合研究開発機構客員研究員、青山学院大学教授を経て2003年10月に国際交流基金理事長に就任。 主な著書に『東西文化摩擦‐欧米vs.日本の15類型』（中央公論社　1990年）、『パリの周恩来‐中国革命家の西欧体験』（中央公論社 1992年／吉田茂賞受賞）、『「西」の日本・「東」の日本‐国際交渉のスタイルと日本の対応』（研究社出版 1995年）、『中国の威信 日本の矜持』（中央公論新社 2001年）、『吉田茂の自問』（藤原書店 2003年）、『グローバリズムへの叛逆』（中央公論新社　2005年）など。

Kazuo Ogoura is President of the Japan Foundation, and a former Ambassador to Vietnam, Korea, and France. After graduating from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law and the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Economics, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served in various positions, including Director-General of the Cultural Affairs Department (1989-92), Director-General of the Economic Affairs Bureau (1992-94), Deputy Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs and Japanese G7/G8 Sherpa (1995-97). He is also an Invited Professor of International Politics in the Economics and Business Department of Aoyama Gakuin University (2003-). His publication includes Pari no Shu Onrai (Enlai Zhou in Paris) (1992), Chugoku no Ishin, Nihon no Kyoji (Dignity of China, Pride of Japan) (2001), Yoshida Shigeru no Jimon (Shigeru Yoshida Searches his Heart) (2003) and Grobarizumu e no Hangyaku (Rebellion against Globalism) (2004).
