Since 1952 over 6,300 Japanese and 2,500 Americans have been awarded a Fulbright grant to pursue academic and cultural activities in the other country as lecturers, researchers, graduate students and language instructors. GARIOA and Fulbright Alumni, known as Fulbrighters, play leading roles in a variety of fields including the Supreme Court, the government, the diplomatic corps, higher education the media and major corporations. |
The GARIOA/Fulbright Alumni Association
The alumni associations were founded in 1982 on the 30th anniversary of the Fulbright Program. There are eleven regional associations-Okinawa, Kyushu, Chugoku, Shikoku, Osaka, Kyoto-Shiga, Chubu, Tokyo, Tohoku, Hokkaido and Hokuriku-which are united by a national board composed of representatives of each association. The objectives of the associations are to promote Japan-U.S. understanding through their activities and to maintain ties among those who shared similar experiences under the GARIOA or Fulbright grant. The principal activity of the associations since 1982 has been a campaign to raise funds to invite more Americans to Japan. The Alumni also provide assistance to the American grantees during their stay in Japan. In spring of 1991, Japanese alumni residing in the greater New York area organized an alumni association, including American alumni of the Japan program.
