Graduate Study Grants

This grant is intended to provide an opportunity for young students who have outstanding academic and personal traits and fully understand the purpose and objectives of the Fulbright Program, to study at a U.S. institution of higher learning for the purpose of obtaining a Doctoral or a Master's degree.

Number of grants to be awarded: Approximately 20 grants, including the Doctoral Dissertation Research category.
Grant Commencement: Autumn quarter/semester 2010
Grant Period: The basic grant period is for one year. The renewal award will be provided depending on the student's academic performance and financial need as determined by the Institute of International Education in New York. The grant is not renewable for the third year and beyond.

Eligibility/Requirements:

a. Current graduate students who intend to pursue an academic career as a teacher, professor or researcher with a university-affiliated research center in Japan.
b. Academicians without a doctoral degree in Japan.
c. Individuals who are in business, government or other professions in Japan who wish to pursue graduate study in the United States.
d. Applicants below 35 years of age at the time of application preferred.
e. Individuals must obtain a bachelor's degree by April 1, 2009.
f. Acceptance from a U.S. university must be obtained by May 1, 2010.
g. Priority is given to those with little to no experience in the U.S.

*The following individuals are NOT eligible:
- Individuals who have already obtained a doctoral degree or plan to obtain one by July 1, 2010.
- Individuals who have already been enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program at an American university and wish to complete the degree.
- Individuals who intend to pursue an internship, residency or research at a U.S. medical or dental school.

English Proficiency:
a. Minimum score of 80 (iBT), 213 (CBT) or 550 (paper-based) on TOEFL taken between June 2007 and May 2009.
b. Depending on English ability, a candidate may be required to participate in a summer orientation.
