Journalist Grants

This grant is intended to provide an opportunity for non-degree research to practicing journalists who wish to enhance their professional expertise at a U.S. institution of higher learning or research facility, in one of the fields of study as outlined previously. This grant is NOT for the study of journalism techniques or theories. Upon returning to Japan, grantees are expected to publish articles in Japanese newspapers/periodicals relating to their U.S. experience. Younger journalists are encouraged to apply.

Number of grants to be awarded: Approximately 3 grants
Grant Commencement: September 1, 2012 – April 1, 2013
Grant Period: 3 to 9 months

Eligibility/Requirements:
a. Practicing journalists with at least 5 years experience in a Japanese-owned print or broadcasting organization, newspaper, periodical, television, radio.
b. Writers or critics with at least 5 years experience who regularly write for or appear in a Japanese-owned print or broadcast program.
c. Individuals must have sufficient English proficiency to conduct research in the U.S. without difficulty.
d. Invitation from a U.S. research institution must be obtained by May 1, 2012.

* Individuals who have graduate study experience in the U.S. are not eligible. (Undergraduate study is acceptable.)
