Journalist Grants

This grant is intended to provide an opportunity for non-degree research to practicing journalists who wish to enhance their professional expertise at a U.S. institution of higher learning or research institution, in one of the fields of study as outlined previously. This grant is NOT for the study of journalism techniques or theories. Upon returning to Japan, grantees are expected to publish articles in Japanese newspapers/periodicals relating to their U.S. experience. For those who have had no academic experience in the U.S. an orientation allowance will be provided.

Number of grants to be awarded:Approximately 3 grants
Grant Commencement: September 1, 2010 -- April 1, 2011
Grant Period: 3 to 9 months

Eligibility/Requirements:
a. Practicing journalists with at least 5 years experience in a Japanese-owned print or broadcasting organization, newspaper, periodical, television, radio.
b. Writers or critics with at least 5 years experience who regularly write for or appear in a Japanese-owned print or broadcast program.
c. Applicants below 50 years of age at the time of application preferred.
d. Individuals must have sufficient English proficiency to conduct research in the U.S. without difficulty.
e. Invitation from a U.S. research institution must be obtained by May 1, 2010.

*The following individuals are NOT eligible:
- Individuals who have graduate study experience in the U.S. (Undergraduate study is acceptable.)
