Doctoral Dissertation Research Grants

This grant is intended to provide an opportunity for outstanding young students and researchers who are seeking a doctoral degree from a Japanese university, to conduct doctoral dissertation research at a U.S. institution of higher learning.

Number of grants to be awarded: Approximately 20 grants, including the Graduate Study category.
Grant Commencement: Autumn quarter/semester 2010 or Winter/Spring 2011
Grant Period: 6 to 10 months

Eligibility/Requirements:

a. Current students of a Japanese Graduate School who have completed their first year of doctoral studies as of April 1, 2010.
b. Individuals who have terminated their student status, but have been a graduate student of a Japanese graduate school beyond the required number of years for completing graduate coursework and have obtained the required credits as of March 31, 2010.
c. Applicants below 40 years of age at the time of application preferred.
d. Acceptance from a U.S. research facility must be obtained by May 1, 2010.

* Individuals who have already obtained a doctoral degree or plan to obtain one by July1, 2010 are not eligible.

English Proficiency:

a. Minimum score of 80 (iBT), 213 (CBT) or 550 (paper-based) on TOEFL taken between June 2007 and May 2009
b. Depending on English ability, a candidate may be required to participate in a summer orientation.
